This original Batchelder mantle tile motif, crafted in California during the early 20th century, embodies the signature artistry of the American Arts & Crafts movement. Known for his influential Pasadena studio founded in 1909, Ernest A. Batchelder produced richly detailed tiles that adorned fireplaces, mantels, and architectural features throughout California’s Mission Revival and Craftsman homes. This section features a floral and foliate relief pattern, hand-pressed in clay and finished with Batchelder’s iconic matte glaze in earthy brown and soft teal tones. The design reflects his hallmark style: understated yet highly textural, with subtle glaze pooling that enhances the intricate linework. Origin: California, c. 1910s–1930s Maker: Batchelder Tile Company Material: Glazed ceramic Condition: Vintage, salvaged. Original wear and patina consistent with age; glaze variations highlight the handmade quality. Use: Ideal for restoration of Batchelder fireplaces, historic preservation projects, or incorporation into new designs that honor the Arts & Crafts tradition. Condition There are a few tiles that will require some restoration and mortar removal. However, the mantle is largely intact!!! It's a true stunner. MUST BE SOLD AS ENTIRE SET; NO INDIVIDUAL TILES WILL BE SOLD. Historical Note Batchelder tiles are prized for their craftsmanship and historical significance. Widely used in Craftsman bungalows and Spanish Revival homes, they represent a uniquely Californian expression of the national Arts & Crafts movement. Salvaged pieces such as this are rare finds, offering both aesthetic and historic value. SHIPPING This item can be shipped for an additional fee. Inquiries: ChicagoStore@RebuildingExchange.org
